That’s right, your desire to be pain free and be able to function and enjoy normal activities of daily living may now finally come true.” Your headache symptoms will vary according to the TYPE OF HEADACHE you suffer from. HEADACHE TYPES:
- Occipital Neuralgia
MIGRAINE HEADACHE: Some 30 million people suffer from migraine headaches. Women are affected more commonly than men. A “trigger” is something that sets off the onset of a migraine headache. Some commonly recognized triggers are changes in the weather, emotional upset, food allergy, and certain foods such as chocolate, red wine, and cheese. Symptoms commonly seen with migraine headaches include sensitivity to light, noise, and odors. The intensity is usually moderate to severe and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. CLUSTER HEADACHE: Cluster headaches occur in cyclical patterns or clusters which gives this condition its name. Cluster headache is one of the most painful type of headache. A cluster period generally lasts from 6 to 12 weeks. Men are more likely to have cluster headaches. Smoking and alcohol use are commonly seen in patients with this type of headache. Common signs and symptoms include excruciating pain usually located in or around the eye. The pain is usually one sided but may radiate to other areas of the face, head, neck, and shoulders. There is usually redness and tearing of the affected eye. Nasal congestion as well as discharge are commonly seen. The pain is often described as sharp, burning, or penetrating. Patients often say the pain feels like a hot poker being stuck in the eye. OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA: Sensation or feeling in the back and top of the head is transmitted by the two occipital nerves. These nerves emerge from the upper cervical spine and make their way through muscles at the back of the head and into the scalp. The occipital nerves can be damaged by injury such as whiplash, infection, arthritis, gout, diabetes, and tumors. Irritation of the occipital nerves are accompanied by pain often described as shooting, electric like, zapping, or tingling. The pain may also radiate or shoot into the eye. In some patients the scalp becomes extremely sensitive to even the slightest touch so that washing the hair or lying on a pillow becomes nearly impossible. TENSION HEADACHE: A tension headache is generally a diffuse, mild to moderate pain that’s often described as feeling like a tight band around your head. A tension headache is the most common type of headache. It may feel as if muscle contractions are responsible for your head pain, which is why this type of headache is referred to as a tension type headache. Common signs and symptoms of a tension headache include a dull, aching head pain. Tenderness on your scalp, neck, and shoulders may be present. The sensation of pressure or tightness across the forehead, the sides of your head, and the back of your head are commonly seen. A tension headache can last from 30 minutes to several days. You may experience these headaches only occasionally or nearly all the time. If the headaches occur 15 days or more a month, they are termed chronic. CERVICOGENIC HEADACHE: This type of headache originates in the neck and then spreads to the front areas of the head. Initially, these headaches are experienced as intermittent episodes then progress to an almost continuous pain. They may be triggered by quick sudden movements of the neck or even a sneeze. Holding a neck position for a period of time when working on your computer may also set off this type of headache. They can also be triggered by applying pressure on the upper part of the back of the neck. Along with head and neck pain you may also experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, noise or sound. Pain running into one or both arms indicates a serious condition. I promised to tell you about a Revolutionary New Headache Treatment that is now available in the Permian Basin for the first time. This treatment was developed by a Pain Management specialist, Dr. Tian Xia. After years of research this new treatment has been successfully utilized in several headache clinics across the USA with tremendous success. SPHENOPALTINE GANGLION BLOCK: The Sphenopaltine ganglion (SPG) is also called the nasal ganglion and is the largest group of nerves outside the area of the brain cavity and is located behind the nose in the sinus area and near the throat. SPG block has been reported to be successful in the relief of a wide variety of headache types. In addition, the SPG block procedure can help you experience pain relief virtually in seconds after it is performed. NON-NEEDLE ACUPUNCTURE: I have been practicing Acupuncture for the past 25 years. I received my post graduate training in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and received my Diplomate from the prestigious Shanghai Research Institute in the People’s Republic of China. It was while studying in China in 1989 that I saw first hand the use of Laser Acupuncture for pain and inflammation. In addition I have studied in Germany and have incorporated the use of Laser and Photon Therapy in our clinic and have attained good to excellent results in the treatment of headaches and pain. “Can You Actually Perform Acupuncture Without Needles? Yes, with the use of cold, low level lasers one can activate the acupuncture points without the use of needles. Lasers amplify light by producing a coherent beam and vary in both power and wavelength. The cold laser reduces inflammation and pain and is very useful in the treatment of chronic pain and headaches. The cold laser is 100% PAINLESS and eliminates the need for acupuncture needles. SPINAL MANIPULATION: Spinal manipulation has been used for over five thousand years by various cultures including the Chinese. In fact, spinal manipulation is one of the major treatments used along with acupuncture by Chinese physicians in large metropolitan hospitals throughout that country. In the USA spinal manipulation is the main tool utilized by chiropractors to correct spinal misalignments. Cervical misalignments are a major cause of both Occipital Neuralgia and Cervicogenic type headaches. PHYSCIAL MEDICINE: If your type of headache is primarily a Tension headache, physical modalities such as ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation will reduce the associated muscle tension causing your headache. Our medical doctors may also recommend Trigger Point injections for those stubborn, irritated and tense muscles.
